EXAM SEASON IS HERE... ARE YOU FINDING IT HARD TO STUDY?

By Lurnay Tshabalala-Mavuso | 04 November 2022

I'M sure we can all agree as students that studying can be a bit challenging or even a whole lot more challenging. We find ourselves being compelled to look at a book for hours or sometimes even page that book for hours not really knowing what you can do to process the information that you need to know for your exam paper.
Studying can be a lot easier when one knows how to do it and also when one knows which ways or tools/methods to use when studying. With me here I have a few tips that have been working for me, which I think would work for you too.

1. GATHER ALL YOUR TOOLS
This means that you need to gather all the books, notepads, pens and the rest of your stationery together and have them in one place, a place where you can easily reach without having to move from your study place to get something and only come back to losing what you were already trying to process and comprehend.

2. FIND A COMFORTABLE PLACE TO STUDY AT
This can be at a quiet coffee shop during the day or in the morning, or at home in your study or your room or even in the lounge room as some people like me can study in the lounge room whilst a TV is on. Finding a comfortable place to study is the best thing to do.

3. JOT DOWN ALL THE TERMS, QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS THAT YOU HAVE AND CANNOT UNDERSTAND
Why you do this, you do this so that you can look up on the internet and do research on what you have concerns about, or even consult with your teacher, lecturer or tutor about the questions and concerns that you have, which you discovered whilst studying.

4. AVOID DESTRUCTIONS
If you are an easily destructed person avoid having your phone or any other unnecessary gadget that might make you lose focus and end up divulging into things you shouldn't be doing whilst you're supposed to be studying. Also avoid studying in places where there are people, especially if you are an easily destructed person. This will be good for you.

5. EAT WELL AND STAY HIDRATED!
Eating well means, EATING WELL! which means that you must avoid all the foods that would make you drowsy and have a runny stomach or make you constipated, like for example fat cakes, burger, fries, yoghurt, ultramel and so...on. It is best to eat fruits, vegetables and also have a bottle of water. Water is important because it gives you the boost that you need to carry on working.

6. TAKE STUDY BREAKS
Do not put pressure unto yourself by wanting to study everything all at once. Take breaks in between your study sessions, during your break time you might, watch a series for 30 minutes, take a walk, or even listen to music and scroll through your social platforms. This is very good because the brain also need to get some rest a bit. Studying 3 hours a day, two subjects is the best trick, Trust me!!

These are a few tips that I believe would help you out if you have a problem with studying and also if you are trying to establish a study pattern but also take note that you are free to add and remove anything from these tips on your study pattern. You must do what you are comfortable in doing and what is beneficial for you also.

All I can say for now is, Good luck on your exams and good luck on studying too!!!!

Namaste!

(picture: vuk'uzenzele.gov.za) Lurnay Tshabalala-Mavuso, Senior Reporter | CURRENT AFFAIRS | 28 May 2025  TSAKANE - Residents are fuming with anger and sadness as they express their sentiments and feelings on the poor service delivery that they are experiencing at Tsakane Magistrates' Court. They have expressed to Tsakane Informer that they have had enough of the court and the court's staff as they always have to beg and run behind the court staff's backs when they have to get service delivery. Among the complainants are elderly people who have filed for cases in the areas of Domestic Violence and in the Criminal department. Residents say that the court no longer serves them the justice that they deserve as cases are always being postponed and reminded for many dates with which when they return they are still getting no attention being given to them.  "The court must be closed because clearly there is no help that we are getting from it. The staff the...
