There are mountain bike races, and then there is the Nuvo Wild Ride — an epic coastal mountain bike adventure that takes riders along the rugged and beautiful stretch of Eastern Cape coastline between Morgan’s Bay and Umngazi River Bungalows.
Perhaps “race” is the wrong word. The Wild Ride is less about speed and more about spirit. It is an experience of cycling, swimming, carrying, pushing, problem-solving and persevering.

Riders cross lagoons with their bikes, haul them up steep dunes and hills, navigate thick sand, contend with tides, and face the ever-changing conditions of one of South Africa’s most spectacular wild coastlines.
I have been fortunate to enjoy many adventures over the years — climbing big mountains, diving some of the world’s great reefs, and participating in a number of mountain biking, hiking and paddling trips. But the Wild Ride has earned a place among my most memorable experiences. It is not necessarily the most difficult or the most remote adventure I have undertaken, but its unique combination of challenge, beauty, discomfort and unpredictability struck a deep chord with me.
For much of the ride, your shoes are full of sand, your body is wet and salty from swimming through lagoons, and your bike is being punished by sand and seawater. And yet, that is exactly what makes it so special.
The event attracts adventurers — people who understand that discomfort and uncertainty are not things to avoid at all costs, but the very ingredients that make an experience meaningful.
This year, for the first time in 26 editions of the event, a stage had to be cancelled. Torrential rain turned parts of the route into something unforgettable. Jeep tracks became rivers, streams swelled into torrents, and driving rain made visibility difficult. Equipment failed, teams got lost, and riders and bikes were swept off their feet in swollen river crossings.
Yet what stood out most was not the hardship, but the camaraderie – not the suffering, but the joy of overcoming. Teams formed human chains across rivers. Competitors shared equipment, helped repair bikes, encouraged one another and made sure that others were safe. In those moments, the Wild Ride was a powerful reminder that adventure is not only about personal courage, but also about community and self-discovery.

As Headmaster of a school I could not help but see strong parallels between this experience and our educational philosophy. At Treverton College our slogan is “Education is an Adventure”. We believe that young people grow when they are challenged — physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially and spiritually. Confidence and resilience are not built by removing every obstacle from a child’s path, but by helping them face meaningful challenges and discover that they are capable of more than they imagined.
The Wild Ride reminded me that the reward of doing hard things is not found only at the finish line. It is found in the struggle, in the problem-solving, in the teamwork, and in the quiet satisfaction of having endured. These are lessons worth learning — on a bicycle, in a classroom, and in life.
Education is an Adventure — and adventure changes us.
