THE OUTCRY ON WATER OUT-GAGES continues as residents of the City of Ekurhuleni are constantly in battle with their municipalities on the issue of water out-gages, but what they are not aware of is that its their usage of water and how they use water is what affects them and largely contributes to the many incidents of water out-gages which have been done by the city to help preserve and conserve water.

Even though this has affected a lot of businesses, households, farming organizations and schools especially with being behind with curriculum as they have to release the learners early because, the Department of Education's policy does not allow teachers to keep learners for long in a school that does not have water supply because of poor sanitation and water access which will expose learners to uncleanliness and at times to sickness caused by hygiene. The City of Ekurhuleni is committed to continue to make campaign for water preservation and conservation to the residents, because it deems it important that residents are made aware of the consequences of not conserving water and using water irresponsibly.

On their 04 September 2024 Statement, The City of Ekurhuleni's Spokesperson Zweli Dlamini shared tips of how residents can save water to avoid water outages, and those tips are to :

1. Water your lawn and garden in the early morning or evening to minimise evaporation.
2. Fix your leaks in your irrigation system and adjust watering schedules on seasonal needs.
3. Sweep driveways, sidewalks and steps rather than hosing them off.
4. Plant drought-tolerant plants and trees that require less water.
5. Use a spring-loaded shut-off on your garden hose to avoid water waste.
6. Avoid washing cars with hosepipes, but rather use buckets, and
7. Lastly, Turn off taps while brushing teeth.

"By following these tips and making water conservation a priority, residents can save money on their water bill as well as reduce strain on water treatment facilities.", said Dlamini.

Dlamini further emphasises that, "The City of Ekurhuleni is committed to promoting water conservation and sustainability. We encourage all residents to join us in this effort by adopting water-saving practices in order to avoid Day Zero."

Ekurhuleni residents are also urged to report any water leaks through the City's Call Centre using any of the listed platforms :

- Call Centre : 0860 543 000

- Email : callcentre@ekurhuleni.gov.za

- My Ekurhuleni App
